Damascus, Nov 27 – The Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) rebel group and allied factions initiated a significant assault on Syrian military positions in western Aleppo on Wednesday, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
The offensive saw HTS and factions from the al-Fatah al-Mubin operations room capturing strategic points in Qubtan al-Jabal and Sheikh Aqil near the 46th Regiment. The clashes were accompanied by heavy exchanges of artillery and rocket fire between the rebels and government forces.
In response, Syrian government forces launched artillery strikes on faction-controlled areas around Atarib, Darat Izza, and nearby villages. A Russian warplane also conducted airstrikes, deploying vacuum missiles, the observatory reported.
While no casualties were immediately confirmed, the region experienced a significant displacement of civilians on Tuesday. Residents from Atarib and surrounding villages fled in anticipation of escalating violence due to HTS military build-ups near the front lines.
Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, formerly known as the Nusra Front, is designated a terrorist organization by Syria, Russia, and several other countries. The group’s ongoing operations and the government's countermeasures have further intensified the instability in the region.
