Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday alleged a conspiracy by central investigative agencies to arrest Delhi Chief Minister Atishi in a fabricated case ahead of the upcoming assembly elections. Addressing a press conference alongside Atishi, Kejriwal claimed, “As per sources, there was a recent meeting between the CBI, ED, and Income Tax Department, during which they were directed to fabricate a case to arrest Atishi.”
He further alleged that the agencies have been instructed to conduct raids on him, Minister Saurabh Bhardwaj, and other senior AAP leaders to divert attention during the election campaign.
Kejriwal criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), accusing it of failing to deliver substantial results during its decade-long influence in Delhi. “The BJP has no achievements to showcase from the last ten years in Delhi. They are only campaigning by criticizing and abusing me, while AAP is presenting a positive agenda based on our work,” he said.
The AAP chief highlighted key initiatives launched by his government, including the Mahila Samman Yojana and a program offering free medical treatment for senior citizens. “We have rolled out the Mahila Samman Yojana and initiated a scheme to provide free medical care for senior citizens. Registrations for these schemes have seen an overwhelming response, which has clearly rattled the BJP,” he said. He also reaffirmed his commitment to the free bus service for women, stating, “I will not let the free bus ride scheme for women stop as long as I am alive.”
Atishi’s Allegations
During the press conference, Atishi echoed Kejriwal’s claims, asserting that she had credible information regarding the BJP’s attempts to fabricate charges against her to derail the free bus service for women. “Even if I am arrested, I have full faith in the legal system and the Constitution. I am confident the truth will prevail and I will secure bail,” she said.
Government Departments Distance Themselves from Schemes
The controversy escalated after Delhi’s Women and Child Development and Health Departments issued public notices distancing themselves from the AAP’s promised schemes. These included the ₹2,100 monthly allowance under the Mahila Samman Yojana and free treatment for senior citizens under the Sanjeevani Yojana.
The notices cautioned the public against providing personal information, such as PAN numbers and voter IDs, to unauthorized individuals, warning that such actions could lead to fraud. The departments stated that any private individual or political party collecting data for these “non-existent” schemes was engaging in fraudulent activities.
The move triggered sharp criticism from Kejriwal, who alleged that the BJP was behind the notices to discredit AAP’s initiatives. “They are completely rattled by the Mahila Samman Yojana and Sanjeevani Yojana. They are trying to malign our efforts by spreading misinformation and planning fake cases,” Kejriwal said in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
BJP’s Counterclaims
BJP MP Bansuri Swaraj added fuel to the fire by stating that she had confirmed with Delhi’s Health Secretary that no such scheme as the Sanjeevani Yojana existed.
The Mahila Samman Yojana, announced in the 2024-25 budget, promises ₹1,000 per month for eligible women over 18, with Kejriwal recently pledging to increase this amount to ₹2,100 if AAP retains power. The Sanjeevani Yojana aims to provide free medical care for senior citizens aged 60 and above at both government and private hospitals.
Amidst the allegations and counterclaims, the heated political environment underscores the significance of these schemes in AAP’s campaign strategy as the assembly elections draw closer.
