The BJP launched a scathing attack on Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, alleging that he had traveled to Vietnam for New Year celebrations while the nation was mourning the death of former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh.
The Union Home Ministry had announced a seven-day national mourning period starting December 26, during which the national flag would be flown at half-mast across the country to honor Dr. Singh, who passed away at the age of 92.
BJP IT Cell Chief Amit Malviya stoked a political controversy, claiming, “While the country is mourning Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh’s demise, Rahul Gandhi has flown to Vietnam to ring in the New Year.” Malviya further accused the Congress leader of politicizing the former Prime Minister’s death and alleged, “The Gandhis and the Congress hate Sikhs. Never forget that Indira Gandhi desecrated the Darbar Sahib.”
The BJP also criticized the Congress and the Gandhi family for their absence at the ceremony where Dr. Singh’s remains were immersed in the Yamuna River in Delhi. A dispute erupted between the two parties after Congress demanded that Dr. Singh be cremated at a memorial site. While Congress accused the BJP of “insulting” the former Prime Minister, the BJP countered, accusing Congress of engaging in “cheap politics.”
Congress responded strongly to the BJP’s allegations, defending Rahul Gandhi’s trip as a private matter. Congress MP Manickam Tagore criticized the BJP for indulging in what he termed “diversion politics,” saying, “The way Modi denied Dr. Saheb a place for cremation on the Yamuna banks and how his ministers cornered Dr. Saheb’s family is shameful. If Mr. Gandhi travels privately, why does it bother you? Get well in the New Year.”
BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla echoed Malviya’s sentiments, accusing Rahul Gandhi of being indifferent to the nation’s grief. “Rahul Gandhi has changed the meaning of LoP from Leader of Opposition to Leader of ‘Pariyatan’ (tourism) and Party,” Poonawalla said. He also referred to past incidents, claiming, “Rahul Gandhi was allegedly partying during the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks. He is not at all concerned about Dr. Manmohan Singh’s demise.”
Dr. Manmohan Singh, widely regarded as the architect of India’s economic reforms, passed away on December 26 at the age of 92. He had been admitted to AIIMS Delhi after a “sudden loss of consciousness” at home, with his death attributed to age-related medical conditions.
The former Prime Minister was accorded full State Honours during his final rites at Nigambodh Ghat on December 28. The ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
As the political fallout continues, the focus remains on Dr. Singh’s significant contributions to India’s economic landscape and the respect his memory commands across the nation.
