Ahead of the 2025 Delhi Assembly elections, Delhi Lieutenant Governor V.K. Saxena has granted the Enforcement Directorate (ED) permission to prosecute Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief and former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in connection with the Delhi excise policy case. This development was confirmed by sources from the LG’s office.
The ED had formally sought sanction for prosecution against Mr. Kejriwal on December 5.
This decision follows extensive investigations into the Delhi government’s excise policy, which has faced allegations of corruption and financial irregularities. The policy has been a focal point of political and legal contention for months.
Reacting to the news, senior AAP leader and Delhi Chief Minister Atishi criticized the move, alleging political motives behind it. “If the LG has indeed granted permission for Mr. Kejriwal’s prosecution, why is the ED withholding the approval copy? This is a deliberate attempt to mislead the public and divert attention from real issues. The BJP should stop engaging in conspiracies and reveal the truth,” she stated in a post on social media platform X.
Meanwhile, the Delhi High Court on Friday granted the ED additional time to respond to a petition filed by Mr. Kejriwal and former Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia. The petition challenges the trial court’s decision to take cognizance of the chargesheets in the excise policy case.
As the legal battle unfolds, this case is likely to play a significant role in shaping the political narrative leading up to the Delhi Assembly elections.
