Farmers to Renew ‘Dilli Chalo’ Protest if Demands Remain Unmet

Two days after halting their ‘Dilli Chalo’ agitation, protesting farmers at the Shambhu border between Punjab and Haryana have announced plans to march toward Delhi again on December 8. Their demands include a legal guarantee for Minimum Support Price (MSP), loan waivers, and additional reforms to support farmers and agricultural workers.

Protest at Shambhu Border: Key Developments

On December 6, a group of 101 farmers, described as marjeevras (those willing to die for their cause), attempted to march toward Delhi from the Shambhu border. The march was halted just meters from their starting point by Haryana police, who had erected multiple layers of barricades. Reports indicate that several farmers sustained injuries after security personnel used tear gas to disperse the group.

Farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pandher confirmed that five to six protesters were injured and were taken to a hospital for treatment. Following the clashes, the march was temporarily suspended, but Pandher asserted that it would resume on December 8 if the government failed to initiate talks.

Farmers’ Demands

The farmers, led by groups including the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (non-political) and the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha, are pressing for:

👉A legal guarantee of MSP for crops.

👉Waivers for farm loans.

👉Pensions for farmers and agricultural laborers.

👉Withdrawal of police cases filed against protesting farmers.

👉A rollback of increased electricity tariffs.

👉Justice for victims of the 2021 Lakhimpur Kheri violence.

Upcoming Protest Plans

A press conference held by farmer leaders on December 6 outlined plans for 101 farmers to march toward Delhi at 12 noon on December 8 if their demands remain unaddressed. "We will wait till tomorrow for discussions with the government. If no talks occur, the march will proceed as planned," Pandher stated from the Shambhu border.

To preempt the planned protest, Delhi Police have reinforced security measures, including setting up barricades and installing metal spikes at the Shambhu border.

Communication Restrictions and Security Measures

Citing security concerns, the Haryana government has suspended mobile internet and bulk SMS services in 11 villages of Ambala district until December 9. Affected areas include Dangdehri, Lohgarh, Manakpur, and Sultanpur.

The farmers, who have been stationed at the Shambhu and Khanauri border points since February 13, remain firm in their demands. Their protests underscore the persistent tension between farmers and the government over agricultural reforms and welfare policies. With their planned march just days away, all eyes are on whether the Centre will engage with the protesting groups to avert further escalation.
