Following the successful development of the Tejas fighter jet, India is poised to achieve another milestone in its defense capabilities with the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) project. The AMCA, a fifth-generation fighter jet, is progressing steadily toward completion, with key components like the airframe nearing the final stages of development.
The airframe, a fundamental element of any fighter jet, determines the aircraft's performance, stability, and structural integrity. It also serves as the base for integrating advanced avionics and systems. Recent reports indicate that the design of the AMCA's airframe is nearly finalized, marking a critical step in the project. The Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO), in collaboration with private defense firms, is spearheading this effort.
A state-of-the-art radar system featuring advanced sensors is being specifically developed for the AMCA. Designed with stealth capabilities, the aircraft will minimize its radar signature, making it a formidable addition to India's defense arsenal. The AMCA will be a twin-engine fighter jet, engineered to replace the Sukhoi Su-30MKI in the Indian Air Force’s fleet as part of a gradual modernization strategy.
Unlike the prolonged development timelines of other fifth-generation aircraft—such as the 15 years it took the United States to develop the F-35—India’s AMCA project is advancing at an accelerated pace. The first prototype is expected by mid-2026, with flight trials projected to commence by 2028.
Despite significant progress, India has yet to achieve self-reliance in the development of fighter jet engines. Similar to the Tejas, which utilizes engines from the U.S.-based General Electric, the AMCA will initially rely on a foreign-manufactured engine. However, this interim solution underscores India’s commitment to strengthening its indigenous defense capabilities in the long term.
The AMCA is designed to excel across diverse combat scenarios, ensuring that the Indian Air Force remains equipped to address evolving defense challenges. This ambitious project not only represents a leap in military technology but also reinforces India’s vision of becoming self-reliant in defense manufacturing.
As the AMCA edges closer to reality, it symbolizes a transformative chapter in India's journey toward achieving technological and strategic independence in aerospace defense.
