External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar reaffirmed India’s commitment to pursuing its national interests and contributing to the global good, emphasizing that the country will not allow external forces to dictate its choices. Speaking via a video message during the 27th SIES Sri Chandrasekarendra Saraswati National Eminence Awards function in Mumbai, Jaishankar highlighted the importance of embracing India’s heritage while advancing as a modern nation.
“Bharat will inevitably progress, but it must do so without losing its Bharatiyata. Only then can we truly emerge as a leading power in a multi-polar world,” he stated. Jaishankar underlined the need for a harmonious blend of tradition and technology in an era of globalization, asserting that India’s identity as a civilization-state uniquely positions it to influence the global order.
The minister stressed that India's independence of decision-making should not be mistaken for neutrality. "We will do whatever is right in our national interest and for the global good without being intimidated to conform. Bharat can never permit others to have a veto on its choices," he affirmed.
Jaishankar pointed to India’s growing role on the global stage, noting that the last decade has showcased the country’s capabilities, confidence, and commitment to tackling longstanding issues such as poverty, discrimination, and lack of opportunities. He also highlighted the nation’s focus on uplifting the Global South and its role as an independent power committed to global welfare.
“For too long, we were schooled to view progress and modernity as a rejection of our heritage and traditions,” Jaishankar remarked. He observed that India’s deepening democracy has brought forth more authentic voices, enabling the country to rediscover its identity and cultural strengths.
“To fully leverage our cultural heritage, it is essential for the younger generation to understand its value and significance,” he added. He emphasized the societal-level impact of this awareness, calling for a deeper appreciation and articulation of India’s unique persona.
Jaishankar acknowledged the progress India has made, while cautioning against persistent constraints and ideological pessimism that continue to challenge the nation. "There are viewpoints and ideologies which are more pessimistic and even denigrating of ourselves," he said, urging the country to rise above these barriers.
The awards, named after the revered 68th Seer of Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam, honor excellence in Public Leadership, Community Leadership, Human Endeavour, Science and Technology, and Social Leadership, with a focus on spiritualism. Although Jaishankar could not attend in person, his message reflected the spirit of the awards in emphasizing the importance of leveraging India’s spiritual and cultural heritage for national and global advancement.
Jaishankar’s remarks come at a pivotal moment, as India asserts itself on the global stage while staying true to its roots—a testament to its unique role as both a modern nation and a civilizational powerhouse.
