India Backs UN Resolution for Ceasefire and Humanitarian Relief in Gaza

India recently joined 157 other nations in voting in favor of a UN General Assembly resolution calling for an immediate, unconditional, and permanent ceasefire in Gaza. This resolution also underscored the urgent need for the unconditional release of all hostages. However, the resolution faced opposition from nine member states, including Israel and the United States, while 13 nations, such as Albania and Ukraine, abstained from voting.

The General Assembly adopted the resolution, titled Demand for Ceasefire in Gaza, during its 10th emergency special session. Introduced by Indonesia, the resolution urged the full implementation of provisions outlined in a June 2024 Security Council resolution. These provisions include an immediate ceasefire, the release of hostages, the exchange of Palestinian prisoners, the return of Palestinian civilians to their homes, and the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza.

Humanitarian and Legal Commitments

The resolution highlighted the urgent need for civilian access to essential services and humanitarian assistance in Gaza. It explicitly rejected any efforts to deprive Palestinians of food and other necessities. Furthermore, it called for the unimpeded delivery of humanitarian aid under UN coordination, emphasizing the dire conditions faced by civilians, particularly in the besieged northern regions of Gaza.

The document also reiterated the obligation of all parties to comply with international law, including humanitarian law, to protect civilians—especially women and children. It demanded the release of all individuals arbitrarily detained, aligning with global legal standards.

Reaffirming the Two-State Solution

The resolution reaffirmed the international community’s commitment to the two-state solution, envisioning Palestine and Israel coexisting peacefully as democratic states within secure and recognized borders. It condemned any attempts to alter Gaza's demographic or territorial boundaries and called for the unification of Gaza and the West Bank under the Palestinian Authority.

India’s Stance on Palestinian Sovereignty

In a parallel development last week, India supported another General Assembly resolution advocating for Israel's withdrawal from territories occupied since 1967, including East Jerusalem. Titled Peaceful Settlement of the Question of Palestine, the resolution was introduced by Senegal and emphasized the necessity of a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace in the Middle East.

India joined 157 nations in endorsing the resolution, which faced opposition from eight member states, including Israel and the United States. Seven countries, including Ukraine and Czechia, abstained.

India's voting pattern at the UN reflects its consistent support for peace, stability, and the principles of international law, reinforcing its position as an advocate for the rights and sovereignty of the Palestinian people.
