In a landmark acknowledgment, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz revealed on Monday that Israel was responsible for the assassination of former Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran earlier this year. The statement, made during an event at the Defense Ministry, underscores Israel's continued resolve to target adversarial leaders across the region.
“We will decisively target the Houthis and dismantle their leadership, just as we did with Ismail Haniyeh, Yahya Sinwar, and Hassan Nasrallah in Tehran, Gaza, and Lebanon. We will execute similar actions in Hodeidah and Sana’a,” Katz declared. His remarks marked the first official admission of Israel’s involvement in Haniyeh's death in late July.
According to a ministry-issued statement, Katz asserted: “Anyone who raises a hand against Israel will face severe consequences. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) will reach and hold them accountable, regardless of their location.”
Haniyeh, a prominent political figure in Hamas known for his negotiation efforts regarding ceasefires in Gaza, was reportedly killed on July 31 in a Tehran guesthouse. The assassination, attributed to an explosive device planted by Israeli operatives weeks in advance, had been blamed on Israel by both Iranian authorities and Hamas, though no direct admission was made at the time. Haniyeh was in Tehran following his attendance at Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian’s inauguration.
This revelation follows Israel’s targeted killings of other high-profile adversaries, including Hassan Nasrallah in Beirut on September 27 and Haniyeh’s successor, Yahya Sinwar, in Gaza on October 16. Sinwar, identified by Israeli officials as the orchestrator of the Hamas-led October 7, 2023 attack on Israel, was killed in an airstrike amid the ongoing Gaza conflict.
During his address, Katz emphasized Israel's commitment to neutralizing threats across the Middle East, including those posed by Yemen's Iran-backed Houthi movement. “The Houthi terrorist organization continues to fire missiles at Israel while targeting commercial shipping in the Red Sea to enforce a naval blockade. This will not be tolerated,” he stated. Katz further outlined plans to dismantle Houthi strategic infrastructure and leadership.
Israel’s actions and declarations come at a time of heightened tensions in the region, with the ongoing Gaza war, conflicts in Lebanon, and strained relations with Tehran amplifying instability.
Haniyeh’s assassination, alongside those of Sinwar and Nasrallah, represents a significant escalation in Israel’s strategy of targeting leaders it deems a threat to its security. As the Israeli-Palestinian conflict continues to evolve, these developments are likely to fuel further regional volatility.
