Pakistan: The Majlis Wahdat-i-Muslimeen (MWM), a religiopolitical organization, has called for countrywide protests in solidarity with the residents of Parachinar. Since December 20, Parachinar residents have been staging a sit-in to protest deteriorating law and order and prolonged road closures.
Demonstrations across Pakistan have highlighted the ongoing violence in Kurram, particularly a recent brutal incident where two individuals traveling toward Parachinar were killed and later decapitated in the district's Bagan area.
Karachi police had earlier assured that all blocked roads would be cleared by Monday evening, later clarifying that measures would aim to minimize disruptions rather than fully clear the protests.
MWM leader Allama Hassan Zafar Naqvi urged demonstrators to keep one lane open at sit-in locations to ease traffic flow. Despite this, he reiterated that the protests would persist until roadblocks in Kurram were lifted. A significant sit-in at Sharea Faisal near Natha Khan Bridge was concluded to facilitate public movement.
Meanwhile, the outlawed Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat (AWSJ) announced counter-protests at 60 city locations starting Tuesday, further escalating tensions.
Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah provided updates, stating that protests at eight of the 12 locations had ended. Speaking at a press conference in Thatta, he acknowledged ongoing sit-ins at four points and emphasized the government’s dual strategy of dialogue and administrative measures.
He noted late-night negotiations with MWM leaders, offering alternatives such as centralized protests that would not disrupt traffic. “Distressing others is not the solution to the crisis in Kurram,” the chief minister stressed, urging all parties to seek constructive resolutions.
The protests underline the urgency of addressing the law and order crisis in Kurram, which has persisted for over a month. Demonstrators have demanded immediate action to restore peace and reopen critical roadways, while tensions in Karachi and other urban centers remain high as civic life faces disruption.
