RCB’s Launch of Hindi Account Sparks Language Debate Amid Pro-Kannada Activism

The Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), the IPL franchise based in Bengaluru, has found itself at the center of a linguistic controversy following the launch of its Hindi social media account on X (formerly Twitter). The account, created in October 2024, has posted only five tweets but has already amassed nearly 2,500 followers as of November 28.

However, the move has drawn criticism from pro-Kannada groups and a section of fans, who see it as an imposition of Hindi on a Kannada-speaking fanbase. Many have expressed their displeasure on social media, with some even starting an online petition urging RCB management to reconsider the decision.

Pro-Kannada Sentiment and Backlash

Critics argue that the introduction of a Hindi account undermines Kannada, the local language of Bengaluru, RCB’s home city. The debate comes amid rising tensions in the city over language issues, with reports of non-Kannada speakers facing hostility. Viral videos have shown instances where auto-rickshaw and cab drivers allegedly demanded passengers to communicate in Kannada or leave the state.

One user on X, identified as Shaani Nani, recounted her challenges as a North Indian living in Bengaluru. “What harassment it was to commute in auto from flat to office and back. The audacity of local auto drivers to strike a conversation on why I was in Bangalore when I belonged to North, if I was learning Kannada,” she wrote, describing her difficulties in navigating the city while speaking Hindi or English.

The woman also claimed to have faced unhelpful interactions with customer service representatives at the Bangalore Electricity Supply Company Limited (BESCOM), further highlighting the language divide.

Support for the Hindi Account

Despite the backlash, a section of fans has defended RCB’s decision to launch the Hindi account. They argue that RCB’s fanbase extends beyond Bengaluru and Karnataka, encompassing a national and global audience. According to supporters, the Hindi account serves to connect with fans across India, reflecting the franchise’s inclusive approach.

RCB’s Auction Strategy

Amid the ongoing controversy, RCB concluded the IPL mega auction with several notable acquisitions. The team opted for a balanced mix of seasoned and emerging players, aiming to bolster its roster for the upcoming season.

Balancing Local Sentiments and Broader Appeal

The debate surrounding RCB’s Hindi account underscores the challenges of balancing regional identity with a growing national and international fanbase. While some see the move as a practical step toward inclusivity, others view it as a neglect of local cultural pride. How RCB navigates this issue could set a precedent for similar debates in Indian sports franchises moving forward.
