Sambhal: ASI Team Conducts Survey at 150-Year-Old Stepwell and Temple Site

Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh: The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has recently set up operations in the Sambhal district, with a focus on surveying a historical stepwell (bawdi) located in Laxmanganj, Chandausi. On Wednesday, a 10-member ASI team arrived at the site around 10 a.m. to begin their investigation. Speculation is rife that the stepwell may house significant artifacts or treasures.

After an initial external inspection, the team proceeded to the first floor of the stepwell, where they conducted photo and video documentation, took measurements, and collected samples. The team remained on-site for approximately three hours. By the fifth day of excavation, the upper level of the stepwell had become clearly visible, revealing a red stone floor and intricately carved gates on either side of the staircase. Out of the six gates, five are plain, while one is adorned with detailed carvings. Behind these gates lies a corridor resembling a chamber. Excavation of the first floor is ongoing.

On December 17, a 150-year-old dilapidated Banke Bihari temple was discovered in Laxmanganj, further enhancing the historical significance of the area.

The Sanatan Sevak Sangh had previously submitted a petition to District Magistrate (DM) Rajendra Pensia during a grievance redressal session, requesting the restoration of the Banke Bihari temple and asserting that a stepwell existed on a nearby vacant plot. Following the DM’s orders, excavation began, leading to the discovery of the stepwell.

On the first day of the excavation, the walls of the stepwell were unearthed. By the second day, the gates of rooms and a tunnel-like corridor behind them had been revealed. On the third day, the staircase leading into the stepwell came into view. Excavation work continues daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The discovery of the 150-year-old Banke Bihari temple and stepwell has brought Chandausi into the spotlight, attracting visitors from across the city who are eager to witness these historic findings.

Historical Significance of the Firoz Fort Stepwell

DM Rajendra Pensia also referenced the discovery of a stepwell at Firoz Fort, stating, "During my visit to Syed Firoz Fort, the ASI team identified an ancient well and a Rajput-era stepwell. This area holds significant historical importance. The ASI team, along with the district administration, is working to clear encroachments and reconnect the wells to their natural water sources.”

The ongoing excavations and discoveries not only highlight the region's rich heritage but also underline efforts to preserve and rejuvenate its historical and natural resources.
