Nearly six weeks after the tragic killing of seven civilians at a construction site in Gagangeer, Ganderbal district, security forces on Tuesday eliminated a Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) commander involved in the attack. The operation unfolded in the Dachigam forest area of Srinagar, following a meticulously planned search initiated by a joint team of the Indian Army and Jammu and Kashmir Police.
According to the Army’s Chinar Corps, the operation was launched in the early hours of December 2, 2024, based on specific intelligence inputs regarding the presence of militants in the region. "During the search, initial contact was established with the terrorists," the Corps stated in a post on X.
Kashmir Zone Police later confirmed that the slain militant was Junaid Ahmad Bhat, a high-ranking LeT operative classified as a Category A terrorist. "In the ongoing operation at Dachigam, one terrorist was neutralized and identified as Junaid Ahmad Bhat. He was involved in the civilian killings at Gagangeer, Ganderbal, and multiple other terror incidents," the police shared in an official update.
The October 20 attack in Ganderbal had shocked the region, leaving seven individuals, including a doctor from Budgam, dead. The victims, comprising laborers and staff of a contractor working on a tunnel project for the Srinagar-Leh National Highway, were targeted when gunmen indiscriminately opened fire on their camp in the Gund area.
Officials noted that the operation at Dachigam remains active, with forces continuing to search the area for any remaining militants.
