In a tragic incident, a dumper truck veered off the road and onto a footpath in Pune, crushing nine people who were sleeping there and killing three, including two children. Six others sustained injuries in the accident, which occurred around 1 a.m. on Monday near Kesnand Phata in Wagholi.
According to police and eyewitness accounts, the truck driver, Gajanan Shankar Totre (26), was allegedly under the influence of alcohol at the time. The vehicle, traveling at high speed, suddenly swerved onto the footpath, where 12 individuals were resting. While three escaped unharmed, the others were struck, with three succumbing to their injuries.
The deceased have been identified as Vishal Vinod Pawar (22), Vaibhavi Ritesh Pawar (1), and Vaibhav Ritesh Pawar (2). The injured victims, who were rushed to Sassoon Hospital, include Janaki Dinesh Pawar (21), Rinisha Vinod Pawar (18), Roshan Shashadu Bhosale (9), Nagesh Nivrutti Pawar (27), Darshan Sanjay Vairal (18), and Alisha Vinod Pawar (47). Three remain in critical condition.
Senior Police Inspector Pandit Rejitwad confirmed that the driver has been arrested and charged with culpable homicide. “An investigation is underway, and a case has been registered against the driver. The incident has left three dead, six injured, and three critically injured who are undergoing treatment at Sassoon Hospital,” he said.
Authorities are now probing the circumstances leading to the incident, with initial findings pointing to reckless driving under the influence. The accident has raised concerns about road safety and the need for stricter enforcement of laws to prevent such tragedies.
