Brian Thompson, the Chief Executive Officer of UnitedHealthcare, a division of UnitedHealth Group (UNH.N), was tragically shot and killed on Wednesday morning outside the Hilton Hotel in Midtown Manhattan, according to reports from the New York Post and Bloomberg, citing police sources.
UnitedHealth Group has yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident. However, the company abruptly canceled the remainder of its investor event in Manhattan, which had just commenced.
"We're dealing with a very serious medical situation involving one of our team members, and as a result, we regret to announce that today’s event will be brought to an early close," said UnitedHealth Group CEO Andrew Witty during the announcement.
The New York Police Department (NYPD) confirmed that a man was shot outside the Hilton Hotel at 1335 6th Avenue, within the Midtown North Precinct. Emergency responders transported the victim to Mount Sinai West Hospital, located less than a mile away, in critical condition. Despite medical efforts, the victim was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
Investigators revealed to CNN that the suspect had been loitering in the area prior to the shooting, suggesting the attack may have been premeditated. As of now, no arrests have been made, and the investigation remains active and ongoing. The NYPD stated that the victim's identity would be disclosed following proper notification of his family.
Brian Thompson, who joined UnitedHealth Group in 2004, had held various leadership roles within the organization before being appointed CEO of UnitedHealthcare in April 2021. UnitedHealthcare operates as a key division of UnitedHealth Group, one of the largest health insurers in the United States.
This developing story continues to draw attention, with further details expected as the investigation progresses.
