Veteran Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Lal Krishna Advani, 96, has been admitted to Apollo Hospital in New Delhi, where his condition is reported to be "stable." Hospital officials confirmed that the former deputy prime minister is under observation and receiving care from Dr. Vinit Suri, a senior consultant in neurology.
Advani was brought to the hospital two days ago, marking his second admission to the facility this year. The reason for his current hospitalization has not been disclosed.
A Storied Political Journey
Born on November 8, 1927, in Karachi (now in Pakistan), Lal Krishna Advani joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) at the age of 14. Following the Partition in 1947, he migrated to India with his family.
Advani began his political career in 1951 by joining the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, founded by Syama Prasad Mookerjee. In 1970, he entered the Rajya Sabha and was elected president of the Jana Sangh two years later. During the Emergency imposed in 1975, he, along with his close associate Atal Bihari Vajpayee, was imprisoned.
With the formation of the Janata Party government in 1977, Advani was appointed minister for information and broadcasting. However, after the collapse of the Janata government, he played a pivotal role in founding the Bharatiya Janata Party in 1980.
Advani is credited with transforming the BJP from a fledgling party with just two parliamentary seats in 1984 to a dominant political force in the 1990s. His leadership during the Ram Janmabhoomi movement, advocating for the construction of a Ram temple in Ayodhya, significantly shaped the party’s political trajectory.
He served as BJP president three times and held key positions in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee-led NDA government, including deputy prime minister and home minister. In 2009, Advani was the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate but the party fell short of securing a majority in the general elections.
Advani’s health update comes as the political community and the nation reflect on his remarkable contributions to Indian politics.
