JALGAON: A tragic incident unfolded on Wednesday evening in Maharashtra’s Jalgaon district, claiming the lives of at least 10 train passengers who were run over by another train after disembarking due to a false fire alarm. The accident occurred between Maheji and Pardhade stations near Pachora, over 400 kilometers from Mumbai.

According to officials, the Lucknow-Mumbai Pushpak Express had stopped around 5 p.m. after passengers pulled the emergency chain amid rumors of a fire. Some passengers who alighted onto the tracks were struck by the Karnataka Express, which was traveling from Bengaluru to Delhi on an adjacent track.
Fatal Panic Triggered by Sparks
Preliminary investigations suggest that sparks in one of the Pushpak Express coaches—likely caused by a "hot axle" or "brake-binding" issue—led to panic among passengers. “Some passengers pulled the chain and jumped down, unaware that the Karnataka Express was approaching,” Central Railway chief spokesperson Swapnil Nila explained.
Maharashtra minister Girish Mahajan confirmed the fatalities, stating that 10 to 12 passengers had lost their lives, as per information from the district collector.
Officials Rush to the Scene
Senior railway officials and Maharashtra’s Jalgaon Guardian Minister, Gulabrao Patil, are on their way to the accident site to oversee rescue and relief operations. “Further details will emerge as officials assess the situation on the ground,” Patil said.
This incident highlights the dangers of misinformation and the need for calm during emergencies. Authorities are expected to conduct a thorough inquiry into the circumstances that led to the loss of lives.
