Who Was Gurpreet Gogi?
Gurpreet Gogi, a prominent figure in Punjab politics, joined the Aam Aadmi Party in 2022, ahead of the state assembly elections. He won his maiden Vidhan Sabha seat by defeating former cabinet minister and two-time MLA Bharat Bhushan Ashu in the Ludhiana West constituency.
Gogi's political journey began at the municipal level, where he served three consecutive terms as a councillor from Ward 76 of Ludhiana West (2007-2012, 2012-2017, and 2017-2022). He also held the position of District Congress Committee (Urban) president from 2014 to 2019. During the Congress government in Punjab, he served as chairman of the Punjab Small Industries and Export Corporation (PSIEC) from 2019 to 2022.
Controversies and Leadership
Gogi garnered headlines on August 23, 2024, when he ordered the removal of a foundation stone for a ₹650-crore pipeline project under the Buddha Nullah rejuvenation initiative. The foundation stone had originally been laid by Gogi himself in 2022. Explaining his decision, Gogi expressed frustration over the "poor performance" of the departments handling the project.
Gogi's untimely demise marks a significant loss for Punjab's political landscape. Investigations into the incident continue as the post-mortem findings are awaited to provide further clarity.
