Dhaka, Jan 6 (PTI): The interim government of Bangladesh has issued a directive requiring all foreigners residing in the country without a valid visa to regularize their status by January 31. Failure to comply will result in legal action, authorities warned on Monday.
Home Affairs Adviser Lt. Gen. (Retd.) Jahangir Alam emphasized that numerous foreign nationals are living in Bangladesh without proper documentation, with some engaging in employment activities. Addressing the issue during a visit to the Central Passport Office in Dhaka, Alam stated, “Foreign nationals without valid visas must obtain one by January 31 to avoid legal action.”
According to Prothom Alo, the adviser highlighted that individuals who fail to meet the deadline would face deportation to their home countries. He also drew attention to cases where Rohingya refugees, initially granted temporary shelter in Bangladesh after fleeing persecution in Myanmar’s Rakhine State, have illicitly obtained Bangladeshi passports through unauthorized means.
The government’s move underscores its commitment to addressing irregular migration while ensuring compliance with national laws.
