BJP President Annamalai Criticizes DMK Government Over Handling of Cyclone Relief and Public Protests

Chennai: Tamil Nadu BJP president K. Annamalai has strongly criticized the ruling DMK government over its handling of public protests related to Cyclone Fenjal relief efforts. Annamalai, in a tweet on the 'X' platform, expressed his disapproval of the government's response to incidents involving both public demonstrations and its treatment of villagers who voiced concerns about inadequate relief.

Annamalai specifically referenced an incident in December 2024, where Minister Ponmudi visited Iruvelpattu village in Villupuram district to assess the damage caused by Cyclone Fenjal. He alleged that Ponmudi, during his visit, did not step out of his car to engage with the affected villagers, which led to mud being thrown at him in protest. Annamalai argued that the action was not driven by personal reasons but by the frustration of the villagers, who felt helpless due to the slow and inadequate relief measures.

The BJP president condemned the government's response to the incident, claiming that the DMK administration, instead of addressing the concerns, had turned to police action to silence dissent. "They are now unleashing the police on the villagers, wreaking havoc under the guise of an investigation," he said. He also criticized the police for violating protocols during the arrests, particularly regarding the treatment of women protesters.

Annamalai further accused the DMK government of failing to properly assess the damage caused by Cyclone Fenjal and for dragging its feet on relief efforts. "The people of Tamil Nadu know that the DMK government has failed to provide timely assistance to those affected by the cyclone," he stated.

The BJP leader also criticized Chief Minister Stalin and his ministers for what he perceived as a superficial portrayal of good governance, citing a movie shoot involving government officials as an example of misplaced priorities. Annamalai questioned why the Chief Minister, instead of addressing the grievances of the affected population, was focusing on persecuting innocent citizens.

In his tweet, Annamalai urged the DMK government to immediately cease its punitive actions against the people of Iruvelpattu and prioritize delivering relief to those affected by the cyclone. He called for a more urgent and compassionate response to the crisis, instead of continuing the alleged retaliation against the public for their protests.

This latest controversy has added fuel to the growing political tension in Tamil Nadu, with opposition parties ramping up their criticism of the state government in the lead-up to the upcoming 2025 assembly elections.
