Controversy Erupts Over Sonia Gandhi’s ‘Poor Thing’ Remark on President Murmu

New Delhi, January 31: The opening day of the Budget Session was overshadowed by a political controversy after Congress MP Sonia Gandhi described President Droupadi Murmu as a “poor thing” following her address to Parliament.

Gandhi’s comment came in response to a journalist’s query about the President’s customary speech, where she remarked, “The President was getting very tired by the end. She could hardly speak, poor thing.” She was accompanied by her children, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, and further added, “Boring? No comments? Repeating the same thing again and again?”

The remarks quickly sparked a strong backlash, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) calling them “derogatory” and demanding an apology.

Rashtrapati Bhavan Issues Statement, Calls Remarks ‘Unacceptable’

Reacting to the controversy, the President’s Office issued a statement condemning Gandhi’s comment as inappropriate and disrespectful to the dignity of the high office.

“These leaders have said that the President was getting very tired by the end and she could hardly speak… The President was not tired at any point. Indeed, she believes that speaking up for marginalized communities, women, and farmers— as she was doing during her address—can never be tiring,” the statement read.

The statement also suggested that Gandhi’s comments might have stemmed from a misinterpretation, adding, “The President’s Office believes it might be the case that these leaders have not acquainted themselves with the idiom and discourse in Indian languages such as Hindi, and thus formed a wrong impression. In any case, such comments are in poor taste, unfortunate, and entirely avoidable.”

BJP Slams Gandhi, Alleges ‘Feudal Mindset’

The BJP launched a scathing attack on Gandhi, accusing the Congress Party of failing to accept an Adivasi woman as the President of India.

BJP MP Sukanta Majumdar criticized the remarks, stating, “This is a derogatory comment. Sonia and Rahul Gandhi should not pass such remarks, especially on the President. Droupadi Murmu comes from an Adivasi family and now she is the number one citizen of the country. Congress’s zamindari mindset cannot digest this, which is why they are opposing her speech.”

BJP IT Cell head Amit Malviya also condemned Gandhi, posting on X, “Sonia Gandhi referring to the President as a ‘poor thing’ demeans the high office and reflects her feudal mindset. This is not the first time Congress has ridiculed the first tribal woman to hold the highest constitutional office in the country. Rahul Gandhi, who frequently flaunts a copy of the Constitution, has not even considered making a courtesy visit to the President.”

BJP National President J.P. Nadda also took to X to denounce Gandhi’s remarks, demanding an apology.

“I and every @BJP4India Karyakarta STRONGLY CONDEMN the usage of the phrase ‘poor thing’ by Smt. Sonia Gandhi for Honourable President of India, Droupadi Murmu Ji. The deliberate usage of such words shows the elitist, anti-poor, and anti-tribal nature of the Congress Party. I demand that the Congress Party unconditionally apologise to the Honourable President and the tribal communities of India,” he posted.

Congress Defends Gandhi, Says She Expressed ‘Empathy’

In response to the uproar, Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi defended Gandhi, arguing that her remarks were made out of concern for the President’s well-being.

“Smt. Sonia Gandhi’s empathy for Hon’ble President Droupadi Murmu ji’s health cannot be digested by the men in BJP. Every person in India has respect and empathy for the President. Will the BJP answer for the disrespect shown to President Murmu when she was not invited to the inauguration of the Parliament or the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya? I challenge them to answer this question,” Gogoi wrote on X.

Political Fallout

The controversy has further intensified the ongoing Congress-BJP rivalry, particularly in the run-up to key elections. While the BJP continues to push for an apology, the Congress maintains that Gandhi’s remarks were taken out of context.

As the Budget Session progresses, the issue is expected to remain a major talking point, potentially affecting parliamentary proceedings.
