Greenland PM Reaffirms Sovereignty Amid US Interest in the Arctic Territory

Greenland’s Prime Minister, Múte Egede, has expressed willingness to engage in dialogue with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump following Trump’s assertion that acquiring Greenland is an “absolute necessity” for U.S. national security. Trump, who is set to take office on January 20, has not ruled out military or economic measures to achieve this goal, sparking international concern.

Speaking at a press conference in Copenhagen alongside Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, Egede responded to questions about potential discussions with the incoming U.S. administration. “No, but we are ready to talk,” he stated, emphasizing Greenland’s openness to dialogue while firmly underscoring the island's sovereignty.

When asked about Trump’s suggestion of using force to secure Greenland, Egede characterized the statement as “serious,” but reaffirmed, “Greenland belongs to the Greenlanders.” He emphasized the importance of international cooperation with allies, adding that Greenland remains committed to maintaining constructive relations with the United States.

Greenland’s Push for Independence

Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark since 1979, has been granted the right to declare independence through a referendum, a prospect Prime Minister Egede reiterated during the press conference.

“The desire for independence, the wish to be in one’s own house, is probably understood by all people in the world,” Egede said. “We do not want to be Danish, we do not want to be Americans, we want to be Greenlandic.” He added that a referendum on independence “will come soon.”

Danish Prime Minister Frederiksen acknowledged the aspirations of Greenland’s people. “There is a strong desire among many Greenlanders to move towards independence,” Frederiksen said, describing this as “both legitimate and understandable.”

US-Greenland Relations and Strategic Interests

Greenland’s strategic significance, particularly in Arctic geopolitics, has long drawn attention. The island is home to a U.S. military base and ballistic missile early-warning systems, underlining its importance to the Western alliance.

While Trump’s interest in purchasing Greenland has been met with rejection, Frederiksen stressed the importance of maintaining close ties with the U.S. “Intensive work is underway with the Americans,” she told Danish media, noting that Denmark and the U.S. share the common objective of strengthening Western security.

Both Frederiksen and Egede have previously dismissed the notion of selling Greenland. Egede reiterated this stance during the press conference: “We are not for sale and never will be for sale.”

The Greenland leadership’s firm stance on sovereignty, coupled with its aspirations for independence, highlights the evolving dynamics in the Arctic region, where strategic, environmental, and economic considerations are increasingly intertwined.
