Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has asserted that billionaire philanthropist George Soros represents a more significant threat to global stability than tech entrepreneur Elon Musk. Her remarks come amidst Musk’s escalating criticisms of European governments and his upcoming involvement in U.S. President-elect Donald Trump’s administration.
At a press event in Rome on Thursday, Meloni addressed questions about Musk’s influence on global politics. “Is the problem that he is wealthy and influential, or that he’s not aligned with left-wing ideologies?” she asked. She argued that Musk does not pose a threat to democracy, contrasting him with Soros, whom she accused of using his financial resources to influence political processes worldwide.
“Election interference occurs when wealthy individuals use their resources to finance parties and associations globally to shape policies, as in the case of George Soros,” Meloni stated.
Musk and Italy’s Telecommunications Security
Meloni confirmed that her government is in talks with several private firms, including Musk’s SpaceX, regarding Italy’s telecommunications security. However, she dismissed allegations of private dealings with Musk on the matter, emphasizing her impartiality.
“I have never discussed this with Musk. It’s not my practice to use my public position to benefit friends,” Meloni said. Her association with Musk has frequently drawn scrutiny, but she reassured Italian lawmakers that her relationship with the tech mogul would not compromise her decision-making, particularly in areas of his economic interest.
Musk's Role in Trump's Administration
Musk is set to take on a role in the Trump administration, joining entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy in leading the unofficial “Department of Government Efficiency” (DOGE). In recent weeks, Musk has intensified his criticisms of European governments, particularly in Germany and the United Kingdom, while also targeting Soros.
Musk recently compared Soros to a Star Wars villain, a comment that followed U.S. President Joe Biden awarding Soros the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Soros, through his Open Society Foundations, has been an influential figure in global politics, funding initiatives and organizations aimed at fostering democracy and human rights. However, his activities have faced backlash, with his foundation’s operations banned in several countries, including Russia, Pakistan, and the Philippines.
Meloni’s Perspective
Meloni’s remarks highlight her ongoing defense of Musk as a pragmatic and non-partisan figure in global politics. By contrasting him with Soros, she has aligned herself with critiques of liberal philanthropy while emphasizing her commitment to maintaining Italy’s sovereignty and democratic principles.
The discourse underscores the growing polarization in global politics, where figures like Musk and Soros are increasingly seen as emblematic of contrasting ideological visions.
