As temperatures drop across large parts of Ireland and snow piles up in various counties, many parents will be wondering whether schools will be open and whether alternative arrangements will need to be made for their children. Parents and students are seeking information on whether schools, crèches and colleges will be open tomorrow.
Irish Prime Minister Simon Harris has addressed the school closures, saying guidelines are in place and facilities will be monitored on an area-by-area basis. Taoiseach Simon Harris urged the public to “proceed with caution.” Schools will decide on a case-by-case basis whether to open or close tomorrow in the face of bad weather , he said.
Met Éireann has issued multiple Status Orange and Status Yellow weather warnings as heavy rain and snow fell across the country. The National Emergency Coordination Group (NECG) met this morning to discuss the weather and briefed Taoiseach Simon Harris and Minister for Local Government Darragh O'Brien on the situation.
A yellow snow/ice warning is in effect for Leinster (Carlow, Dublin, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Longford, Louth, Meath, Offaly, Westmeath, Wexford and Wicklow), Cavan, Monaghan and Munster (Clare, Cork, Limerick, Tipperary, Waterford and Kerry) from 5pm and will remain in place until 12am.
A yellow low temperature and ice warning is in place across the country until 12pm on Thursday. Met Éireann said there will be very cold nights with widespread snow and sleet, and temperatures will struggle to rise above freezing during the day. An orange snow warning for 11 counties ends at 8pm tonight.

59,000 homes, farms and businesses are without power due to the weather. Public transport and sporting events were disrupted, and Cork Airport was closed from 2.30pm to 5.15pm today. Many flights were diverted to Dublin Airport during this time. Cork County Council said many routes in north-west Cork were impassable after more than 30cm of snow fell.

Health services in various counties in Ireland have been disrupted by snow and staff shortages. All non-urgent appointments, such as outpatient appointments and other clinical appointments, have been cancelled in Cork HSE services from tomorrow, Monday 6 January. This means that on Monday, all urgent appointments at CUH, South Infirmary Victoria Hospital, Mercy University Hospital, Bantry Hospital and Mallow Hospital will not go ahead." HSE South West added that not all gynaecology outpatient appointments are going ahead at Cork University Maternity Hospital. "However, antenatal appointments are going ahead, which means any expectant mother with an appointment should attend." HSE staff will be contacting patients with urgent appointments such as dialysis and chemotherapy to make arrangements. . Homeless support services expanded in Galway:
Over the next 5 nights, COPE Galway will be operating as an extension of the Cold Weather Response. An extended overnight accommodation facility will be operating from 9pm to 8.30am and for the duration of the freezing spell. The COPE Galway Night Team can be contacted on (085) 2878876. A freephone number will also be available from 7pm to 11pm every day on 1800-788887. The COPE Galway Day Centre service on the Westside has extended its hours from 8.30am to 8.30pm.
Water supplies have been disrupted in Dublin. Uisce Éireann crews have discovered burst watermains affecting customers in Knockleone, Millbrook Lawns, Avonbeg, Tallaght Village, Balrothery, Kilnamanagh, Crumlin and Walkinstown. The company said repairs will continue until 12 midnight tonight. Uisce Éireann said work is underway to restore services to parts of South County Dublin and Dublin City following the weekend's weather.

Irish train service Iarnród Éireann said in a statement that all but one route were expected to operate tomorrow morning: "Due to the weather, the Nenagh branch line (Limerick to Ballybrough) will not operate on Monday morning - replacement bus services are not possible due to road conditions. The situation will be reviewed at midnight on this route."
