Israeli Army Launches Operation in Jenin Amid Ongoing West Bank Tensions

Jenin Under Siege

The Israeli army announced on Tuesday the launch of a "counter-terrorism operation" in Jenin, a city in the northern West Bank occupied by Israel since 1967. According to local officials, the operation has caused significant disruption. Governor Kamal Abu Rub described the situation as "very difficult," reporting that the army has bulldozed roads leading to the Jenin camp and hospital. Continuous gunfire and explosions have been reported, alongside aerial surveillance. The Israeli army stated on Wednesday that it had "neutralized over ten terrorists" during the operation.

Knife Attack in Tel Aviv

In Tel Aviv, five people were injured, one critically, in a knife attack on Tuesday night. According to Israeli police, the assailant, identified as a 28-year-old foreign national who had recently arrived in the country, began stabbing civilians in a busy part of the city before moving to a nearby street where he attacked another individual. Police shot and killed the attacker at the scene.

Israeli Chief of Staff Resigns Amid Criticism

Herzi Halevi, Israel's Chief of Staff, resigned on Tuesday, citing responsibility for the failure to prevent an October 7, 2023, attack by Palestinian Hamas. In his resignation letter, Halevi admitted that not all military objectives in the ongoing conflict had been achieved but pledged continued efforts to dismantle Hamas and secure the release of hostages.

Ceasefire Holds Amid Fragile Peace

The ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, in effect since Sunday, remains tenuous. The truce follows over 15 months of conflict initiated by an unprecedented Hamas attack. While the Gaza Strip remains in ruins, Hamas issued a statement on Tuesday referring to "a heroic operation," which they did not claim responsibility for but used to highlight ongoing resistance.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres praised former U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday for his "significant contribution" to facilitating the ceasefire during the World Economic Forum in Davos.

This developing story underscores the enduring volatility in the region and the international efforts aimed at maintaining fragile peace.
