New Delhi: AAP National Convenor and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday raised concerns over the rising metro fares in the capital, particularly affecting students who rely heavily on the metro for daily commutes. Addressing the issue, Kejriwal proposed a 50% discount on metro fares for students, calling it a matter of public interest rather than politics.
“The metro is a 50-50 venture between the Delhi government and the Central government, and a large number of students use the metro in Delhi. It has become expensive, and a common student faces significant challenges commuting,” Kejriwal said.
In a bid to alleviate the financial burden on students, the Delhi Chief Minister stated that he had written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, requesting the implementation of the discount. "The expense incurred from providing this concession will be shared equally between the Delhi government and the Central government," Kejriwal added.
Kejriwal emphasized that the proposal was aimed at addressing the concerns of students and that there was no political agenda behind it. He expressed hope that the Prime Minister would accept the proposal for the benefit of students in the city.
Furthermore, Kejriwal announced that post-elections, the Delhi government plans to introduce free bus travel for all students in the city. "We will also provide a 50% concession in metro fares for all Delhi students," he said.
The proposal comes as part of the AAP government’s ongoing efforts to make public transport more accessible and affordable for the residents of Delhi, especially students.
