Mumbai/Prayagraj: Maharashtra Congress president Nana Patole on Thursday demanded the resignation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, holding them morally responsible for the tragic stampede at the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj.
The incident, which occurred in the Sangam area of the Maha Kumbh during the pre-dawn hours of Mauni Amavasya on Wednesday, resulted in at least 30 deaths and 60 injuries, as millions of devotees gathered for the auspicious holy dip. The Maha Kumbh, which began on January 13, will continue till February 26.
Congress Alleges Excessive Political Publicity at Kumbh
Speaking to PTI Videos, Patole alleged that the religious congregation had been turned into a political spectacle, with excessive branding and banners of PM Modi and CM Yogi dominating the event.
"Kumbh has been reduced to an event where only the faces of Modi and Yogi are visible. They must take responsibility for the tragic incident," Patole stated. He further claimed that the actual death toll could be higher than the official figures.
"Both Yogi and Modi must step down. Their excessive 'event baazi' has overshadowed the sanctity of the Kumbh. They should be held accountable for the mismanagement that led to the loss of lives," he added.
Uttar Pradesh Government Enhances Safety Measures
In the wake of the stampede, the Uttar Pradesh government has intensified efforts to ensure better crowd management and the safety of devotees as large numbers continue to throng Mahakumbh Nagar.
According to Superintendent of Police (Traffic) Anshuman Mishra, the area has been declared a no-vehicle zone until the crowd disperses completely. However, essential services, including police administration vehicles, ambulances, and suction machines, will be allowed entry to facilitate smooth operations at the religious gathering.
With millions of pilgrims still expected to visit Prayagraj in the coming weeks, authorities are now on high alert to prevent any further incidents and ensure a safe and organized Maha Kumbh experience for devotees.
