Dehradun (Uttarakhand): In a proactive move to mitigate forest fire incidents in highly sensitive districts, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has directed the Chief Conservator of Forests (CCF) to take immediate action for effective control and management of wildfires ahead of the 2025 forest fire season, according to an official release.
To enhance preparedness, the Forest Department has appointed ten senior officers as nodal officers across key districts. These officials will oversee coordination between resources and district-level departments to ensure a swift and organized response to forest fires. The nodal officers will also review preparedness strategies ahead of the fire season, ensuring that district-level control mechanisms are strengthened.
Strengthening Forest Fire Management
The Uttarakhand Forest Department has issued an office order mandating the early appointment of nodal officers for better preparedness. These officers will play a crucial role in monitoring, coordinating, and implementing control measures at the district level, ensuring an efficient response to fire incidents across the state’s forest divisions.
Additionally, to enhance community participation in forest fire prevention and management, the department has been conducting research and field training programs for on-ground personnel, the State Environment Agency (SEA), and Forest Fire Management Committees.
Replicating the ‘Sheetalakhet’ Model for Wildfire Control
A key aspect of Uttarakhand’s forest fire mitigation efforts is the replication of the “Sheetalakhet Model”, a successful community-based wildfire management initiative implemented under the Almora Forest Division.
As part of this initiative, exposure visits have been conducted for 20 teams from 15 forest divisions, involving 970 personnel, including Forest Panchayat Sarpanches and field officials. The aim is to equip stakeholders with best practices in wildfire control and enable them to implement similar strategies across all forest divisions of the state.
With these measures in place, the Uttarakhand government is reinforcing its commitment to proactive forest fire management, ensuring that both government agencies and local communities are well-prepared to tackle wildfire threats effectively in the coming season.
