Maharashtra Forms SIT to Address Bangladeshi Infiltrators Amid Political Row

The Maharashtra government has established a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to identify Bangladeshi infiltrators across the state. Official communication regarding the SIT's formation has been dispatched to all Divisional Commissioners and District Collectors.

The SIT’s creation follows a complaint and supporting evidence provided by Maharashtra BJP Vice President Kirit Somaiya. Notably, District Collectors and Sub-Divisional Officers had previously been empowered to issue delayed birth and death certificates, a measure now under scrutiny for its potential misuse.

Trigger Incident: Attack on Saif Ali Khan

The move comes in the wake of an attack on Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan by a suspected Bangladeshi national, identified as Shariful Islam Shehzad. The accused, allegedly an illegal immigrant, is believed to have entered India via the northeastern border.

Political Tensions Over Illegal Immigration

The incident has sparked a political firestorm in Maharashtra, with opposition parties criticizing the Mahayuti-led state government for lapses in law and order.

Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aditya Thackeray directed sharp criticism at Union Home Minister Amit Shah, accusing the BJP-led central government of failing to curb the influx of illegal Bangladeshi immigrants despite holding power for three consecutive terms. Thackeray questioned the government’s effectiveness in addressing national security concerns.

Adding to the discourse, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut demanded Amit Shah’s resignation, holding him accountable for the issue. Raut further suggested the deportation of former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who he claimed had been granted asylum by India, as part of broader measures to address illegal immigration.

Meanwhile, NCP (SP) leader Rohit Pawar alleged that emphasizing the Bangladeshi origin of the accused was a diversionary tactic by the government to deflect from opposition critiques of the state’s deteriorating law and order situation.

Implications and Next Steps

The formation of the SIT highlights the government’s effort to address the politically sensitive issue of illegal immigration. However, the matter remains contentious, with accusations of political maneuvering and failures in governance dominating the narrative. The SIT’s findings and subsequent actions will likely shape the ongoing debate on national security and illegal immigration in Maharashtra.
