Kolkata: The mother of Sanjay Roy, convicted of the rape and murder of a medical professional from R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital, expressed her acceptance of the court's verdict on Sunday, stating that if her son is guilty, he should face the punishment he deserves, even if it includes the death penalty.
Speaking to the media for the first time since the Sealdah court's verdict on January 18, Malati Roy, Sanjay’s mother, said, “As a woman and a mother of three daughters, I understand the anguish of the victim’s family. The victim was like my own daughter. I will cry alone, but I accept his punishment as destiny.”
The victim’s mother welcomed the conviction but emphasized that justice remains incomplete as others allegedly involved in the crime have yet to be apprehended. “Sanjay’s guilt has been established through biological evidence. His silence during the trial further confirmed his involvement in the torture and killing of my daughter. But he did not act alone. There are others who have yet to be arrested. Justice has not been fully served,” she told PTI.
The grieving mother vowed to continue the fight for justice alongside her husband. “This case will only be complete when every individual involved in my daughter’s murder is brought to justice. Until that day, we will not rest,” she said.
Court Verdict and Next Steps
The Sealdah court found Sanjay Roy guilty of the rape and murder of the on-duty doctor at the state-run R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital. The conviction was delivered under Sections 64 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which pertains to rape, as well as Sections 66 and 103(1) of the same act, which address murder and its associated punishments.
The additional district and sessions judge, Anirban Das, announced that the sentencing will take place on Monday.
The judgment follows an in-camera trial that began in November 2024, concluding nearly two months later. The heinous crime was committed on August 9, 2024, with the conviction being pronounced 162 days after the incident.
The case has reignited calls for stringent measures to ensure justice and protect medical professionals on duty, as the victim’s family and the public await the next legal steps.
