Maharashtra Congress President Nana Patole on Thursday criticized the BJP-led government in the state, citing a "complete breakdown" of law and order following an attack on actor Saif Ali Khan. Patole alleged that the incident highlights a growing environment of insecurity for citizens, celebrities, and even leaders of the ruling party in Maharashtra.
Patole demanded the resignation of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who also holds the Home Ministry portfolio, calling him "ineffective" and "weak." He stated that the rising crime rate in the state underscores the government’s failure to maintain law and order.
“The Chief Minister must go beyond making hollow statements and take concrete action,” Patole said in a statement.
Attack on Saif Ali Khan Sparks Concern
The 54-year-old actor was stabbed multiple times by an intruder inside his Bandra apartment early Thursday morning. The attacker, who managed to flee, entered Khan's 12th-floor apartment in the 'Satguru Sharan' building around 2:30 am. The actor was rushed to Lilavati Hospital, where emergency surgery was performed, and doctors have confirmed that he is now out of danger.
Patole described the attack on the Padma Shri award-winning actor as a glaring example of the state's deteriorating law and order.
“If such an incident can occur in a high-profile area like Bandra, it raises serious questions about the safety of anyone in the state,” Patole said. He also pointed to escalating crime rates in Mumbai, Pune, Beed, Parbhani, and Nagpur as further evidence of administrative failure.
Criticism of the BJP Government and Police System
Patole accused the BJP-led Mahayuti government of fostering lawlessness, claiming that criminals have become emboldened under its rule. “The attack on Saif Ali Khan is a direct challenge to the state’s law and order machinery,” he said.
He also criticized the police administration, highlighting the ineffectiveness of having two police commissioners in Mumbai. “Despite this, neither the state nor its capital has an effective law and order system,” he added.
Citing specific incidents, including organized crime in Beed, custodial deaths in Parbhani, the assassination of former minister Baba Siddique in Bandra, and firing at actor Salman Khan’s residence, Patole said the government has failed to protect its citizens.
Failure to Address Rising Crime
Patole slammed Fadnavis for attending a film screening while serious crimes plagued the state. “Instead of addressing the life-threatening attack on Saif Ali Khan, CM Fadnavis was busy promoting Kangana Ranaut’s film Emergency,” he claimed.
“The Chief Minister repeatedly assures the public with statements like ‘criminals won’t be spared,’ but these words are meaningless without strong action,” Patole said.
“Maharashtra is unfortunate to have a Home Minister who is inactive and weak,” Patole concluded. He reiterated his demand for the resignation of CM Fadnavis, urging the government to take immediate and decisive action to restore law and order in the state.
