RG Kar Victim’s Father Expresses Discontent with Court Verdict and CM Mamata Banerjee’s Role

Kolkata: The West Bengal government has moved the Calcutta High Court seeking capital punishment for Sanjay Roy, who was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment for the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The Sealdah trial court had delivered its verdict on Monday, sentencing Roy to life imprisonment, citing the case did not meet the criteria for the “rarest of rare” required for the death penalty.

The victim’s father expressed dissatisfaction with both the court’s decision and the role of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, alleging that the initial investigation was compromised. “She [Mamata Banerjee] should not act in haste. Whatever she has done so far, she should not do any further,” he said, as quoted by The Indian Express.

The father also criticized the handling of the case, accusing the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) of failing to present sufficient evidence to secure the death penalty. “She [Banerjee] can say many things, but evidence was tampered with. The then police commissioner and others tampered with it. Could she not see this from the beginning?” he added.

Trial Court Ruling

The verdict, delivered by Judge Anirban Das of the Sealdah trial court, drew criticism from both the victim’s family and the state government. The court highlighted lapses in the initial investigation conducted by the Kolkata Police, noting attempts to frame the incident as a suicide. Despite the shortcomings, the court determined that the case did not meet the threshold for capital punishment.

Government’s Appeal and CM’s Displeasure

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee publicly expressed her disappointment with the life sentence and has supported the government’s decision to appeal for the death penalty. The Calcutta High Court has admitted the petition filed by the state government, allowing the challenge to proceed.

The case has reignited debates over the efficiency of investigative agencies and the handling of high-profile crimes, with the victim’s family and public opinion calling for stronger punitive measures to ensure justice.
