A day after Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin criticized Governor R.N. Ravi for his decision to leave the assembly without delivering the customary address, calling it "childish," the Raj Bhavan has issued a sharp retort, labeling Stalin’s comments as reflective of "arrogance" and cautioning that such behavior is "not good."
The controversy erupted on January 6 when Governor Ravi exited the Tamil Nadu Assembly without delivering his address. The Raj Bhavan later clarified that the Governor left "in deep anguish" because the national anthem was not played. Thiru @mkstalin asserts that insisting on due respect to the National Anthem and doing fundamental duties enshrined in the Constitution is “absurd” and “childish”. Responding to Stalin's remarks, the Raj Bhavan released a statement on Sunday via X (formerly Twitter), asserting:
"Stalin asserts that insisting on due respect to the National Anthem and fundamental duties enshrined in the Constitution is ‘absurd’ and ‘childish.’ Thanks for betraying the true intentions of the coalition of interests and ideologies he leads—one that does not accept and respect Bharat as a nation and her Constitution."
The statement further added: “Such arrogance is not good. Please do not forget that Bharat is the supreme Mother and the Constitution is the supreme faith for her children. They will not like or tolerate such brazen insults."
Stalin’s Criticism of the Governor
During a debate on the motion of thanks to the Governor’s address on Saturday, Stalin accused Governor Ravi of acting with "political motives" and undermining the assembly’s dignity.
Stalin remarked, “In 2022, the Governor delivered his address without alteration, but in the past three years, he has avoided delivering the customary speech, citing absurd reasons. It appears the Governor is unable to digest the progress Tamil Nadu is making.”
He further added, “This House, created through the will of crores of people, cannot tolerate the Governor insulting the Tamil anthem or disregarding the Assembly’s dignity and the people’s sentiments. Such actions, motivated by political bias, are unacceptable and must not recur.”
The escalating tensions highlight the growing friction between the Tamil Nadu government and the Governor, raising questions about the dynamics of constitutional roles and state-center relations.
