Authorities in the United States have announced the dismissal of the police officer responsible for the fatal collision that resulted in the death of an Indian student. The incident occurred in Seattle, where 23-year-old Jahnavi Kandula from Andhra Pradesh was struck by a police vehicle.
In January 2023, Seattle Police Officer Kevin Dave was behind the wheel of a speeding patrol car when it struck Kandula, a graduate student at Northeastern University, throwing her approximately 100 feet from the impact. The officer’s vehicle was reportedly traveling at speeds of up to 119 km/h at the time of the collision.
Seattle Police Chief, Chief Sue Raher, confirmed the dismissal of Officer Dave, revealing the decision in an email to department staff on Monday. The dismissal came after a year and a half of investigation into the incident.
Although the crash was not considered intentional, the investigation found that Officer Dave failed to exercise sufficient caution while driving, leading to his termination. At the time of the accident, Dave was driving the police patrol vehicle that struck and fatally injured Kandula.
Additionally, following the incident, another officer, Daniel Auderer, was previously dismissed from the department after it was revealed that he made inappropriate and dismissive comments about the incident, mocking the situation after Kandula’s death.
The case has sparked widespread attention and criticism, raising concerns about police conduct, speed enforcement, and accountability.
