Funeral Arrangements and Ceremonial Honors
The official six-day state funeral will commence on Saturday, January 6, in Carter’s hometown of Plains, Georgia. His remains will travel by motorcade through the town, pausing at the farm where Carter grew up. In a symbolic tribute, the National Park Service will toll the historic farm bell 39 times, honoring his role as the 39th President of the United States.
Following the Plains ceremonies, Carter’s remains will be transported to Atlanta, where he will lie in repose at the Carter Presidential Center until the morning of January 7. From there, his body will be flown to Washington, D.C., to lie in state in the U.S. Capitol Rotunda ahead of the national funeral service.
Final Resting Place in Georgia
After the ceremony at the Washington National Cathedral, Carter’s family will hold a private funeral and interment later on January 9 in Plains, Georgia. He will be buried alongside his wife, Rosalynn Carter, on the grounds of their longtime family home.
Legacy of Service
Jimmy Carter, a Democrat, served as President from 1977 to 1981, defeating Republican incumbent Gerald Ford in the 1976 election. His administration is remembered for significant achievements, including the 1978 Camp David Accords, which fostered peace between Israel and Egypt. Post-presidency, Carter dedicated his life to humanitarian efforts, earning the Nobel Peace Prize for his work in advancing global human rights and promoting peace.
Global leaders and former U.S. presidents have expressed their condolences, praising Carter as a compassionate and humble statesman committed to peace and progress. His passing marks the end of an era, but his contributions to the nation and the world leave a lasting legacy.
