New Delhi, February 21: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Atishi on Friday questioned why the newly-formed Delhi government failed to approve the ₹2,500 monthly allowance scheme for women in its first cabinet meeting.
Atishi, a former minister in the Delhi government, accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led administration of reneging on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s promise of financial assistance to women under the Mahila Samriddhi Yojana.
Speaking at a press conference, Atishi recalled that both PM Modi and BJP National President JP Nadda had assured before the Delhi elections that the scheme would be approved in the very first cabinet meeting and that every eligible woman in Delhi would receive ₹2,500 in their bank accounts by March 8.
‘First Decision of the New Government was to Betray Women’: Atishi
Atishi, who was elected from the Kalkaji Assembly constituency, alleged that despite the swearing-in of BJP ministers and the cabinet meeting held on Thursday evening, the scheme was not passed.
"Had Modi’s guarantee been real, this scheme should have been approved immediately. Instead, the first decision taken by newly-appointed Chief Minister Rekha Gupta was to betray that promise," she remarked.
Displaying posters featuring PM Modi and CM Rekha Gupta, Atishi demanded clarity on when the promised funds would be transferred to women’s accounts. "Was this just another election gimmick?" she asked.
AAP and BJP Both Promised Financial Assistance to Women
Both AAP and BJP had pledged monthly financial aid for women as part of their election campaigns, making it a key issue in the polls.
A day after AAP lost power in Delhi on February 8, party chief Arvind Kejriwal met with the 22 newly elected AAP MLAs at his residence.
Following the meeting, Atishi stated that AAP would ensure that BJP fulfills its pre-election commitments, including:
✅ ₹2,500 monthly assistance to women
✅ 300 units of free electricity
✅ Continuation of key public welfare schemes
CAG Report Not a Major Concern, Says Atishi
When asked about the BJP government’s decision to table 14 Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) reports in the next assembly session, Atishi dismissed it as “routine work”.
"When I was a minister, I too sent CAG reports to the Lieutenant Governor. It’s part of the process," she said.
The BJP-led Delhi government has stated that it will present these CAG reports in the upcoming session starting Monday, highlighting what it calls mismanagement by the previous AAP government.
