Car plows into crowd in Germany, 20 in critical condition, terror attack?
Emergency services said 20 people were injured after a car plowed into a crowd in the German city of Munich. “There are now 20 injured, many of them seriously, some of them life-threatening,” fire service spokesman Bernard Peschke said.
“A man is lying in the street, a young man has been taken away by the police. People are sitting on the ground, crying and shaking,” a reporter for local BR broadcaster wrote in a post on X. The broadcaster said the incident affected people taking part in a protest demonstration organised by the Verdi union. But the union said it had not received any information about the incident.
The incident came as the southern German city was preparing for a high-level security summit to be attended by US Vice President JD Vance and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The Munich Security Conference begins tomorrow, with senior officials including Mr Vance and Mr Zelensky expected to arrive later today.
A large police presence is seen near the central railway station. X said they had taken the driver into custody and did not believe there was a further threat, but declined to comment on whether it was an accident.
