Congress Calls President’s Rule in Manipur an Admission of BJP’s Failure

The Congress party on Friday criticized the imposition of President’s Rule in Manipur, calling it a direct acknowledgment of the BJP’s failure to govern both at the state and central levels. Party president Mallikarjun Kharge demanded that Prime Minister Narendra Modi apologize to the people of Manipur for the deteriorating situation in the state.

In a post on X, Kharge stated that the imposition of President’s Rule signals a constitutional crisis in Manipur. "Narendra Modi ji, your party has been in power at the Centre for 11 years and in Manipur for 8 years. The BJP was responsible for maintaining law and order in the state, as well as ensuring national security and border patrol. By suspending your own party’s government, you have admitted to failing the people of Manipur," he wrote.

Kharge further claimed that President’s Rule was imposed not as a proactive measure but due to the BJP’s inability to manage the crisis, as none of the NDA MLAs were willing to take responsibility for what he called the government’s "incompetence." He accused the BJP’s "double-engine government" of having "run over the lives of innocent people in Manipur" and urged Modi to visit the state, listen to the grievances of its citizens, and apologize.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi echoed these sentiments, stating that the imposition of President’s Rule was a delayed admission of the BJP’s inability to govern Manipur. "Now, PM Modi can no longer deny his direct responsibility for Manipur," Gandhi said in a post on X. He questioned whether the Prime Minister had any plans to visit the state and outline a strategy for restoring peace and normalcy.

The central government imposed President’s Rule in Manipur on Thursday, placing the state assembly under suspended animation. This move followed the resignation of Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, whose tenure saw nearly 21 months of ethnic violence that has claimed over 250 lives. A notification issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs confirmed that the assembly, which was set to remain in office until 2027, has been suspended indefinitely.

With Manipur facing ongoing turmoil, the political crisis has deepened, raising concerns over governance and stability in the northeastern state.
