Calcutta High Court Grants Conditional Approval for RSS Rally in Burdwan

Kolkata, February 14, 2025 – Overruling objections from the West Bengal government, the Calcutta High Court on Friday granted conditional permission to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) to hold a rally in Burdwan district on February 16.

The RSS had approached the court after the state police denied permission, citing concerns that the use of loudspeakers during the ongoing Madhyamik Pariksha (secondary examinations) would disrupt students. However, the bench of Justice Amrita Sinha ruled in favor of the organizers, allowing the event to proceed while imposing restrictions on crowd size and loudspeaker volume to mitigate disturbances.

RSS Challenges Police Denial in Court

A day earlier, on February 13, the West Bengal unit of the RSS moved a single-judge bench of the Calcutta High Court challenging the district police’s refusal to permit the meeting, which RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat is set to address. The police cited the proximity of a school to the rally venue and the ongoing state board examinations as reasons for their decision. However, RSS representatives countered that since the event is scheduled for a Sunday, it would not interfere with the examination process.

Bhagwat, who is currently on a tour of West Bengal, has been meeting with RSS functionaries to discuss strategies for expanding the organization's influence in the state. The Burdwan rally is seen as a key component of this outreach, particularly in central Bengal.

Political and Social Context of Bhagwat’s Visit

Political analysts note that Bhagwat’s visit carries significant weight, particularly as the state gears up for the crucial West Bengal Assembly elections in 2025. Additionally, the visit takes place amid growing concerns over the reported persecution of minority Hindu communities in neighboring Bangladesh, an issue with direct ramifications for West Bengal, which shares the longest international border with the country.

In another notable development, on February 8, Bhagwat met with the family of the victim in the R.G. Kar rape and murder case. The victim’s parents sought his intervention in ensuring a fair investigation and justice for their daughter. Bhagwat assured them that the RSS would press for necessary action from the central government to ensure accountability in the case.

With the court’s ruling clearing the way for the rally, the upcoming event in Burdwan is expected to be a significant moment in the RSS’s ongoing engagement in the state.
