New Delhi [India], February 11 – Senior Congress leader and Member of Parliament Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa has strongly criticized Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convenor Arvind Kejriwal’s recent meeting with party MLAs, suggesting that the urgency of the gathering indicates potential internal instability within AAP.
"The election results were declared on February 8, and the very fact that such a meeting was called so soon signals that the party is on the verge of collapse. Mid-term elections in Punjab are inevitable. Typically, when a party loses, discussions take place within the affected state, not on a national scale. AAP seems to be concerned that what transpired in Delhi could soon be mirrored in Punjab," Randhawa stated in an interview with ANI.
Concerns Over Governance and Law & Order in Punjab
Randhawa further raised concerns regarding Punjab’s deteriorating law and order situation, particularly pointing to issues of gangsterism and terrorism. He also took aim at the Punjab government’s response to separatist elements, alleging a lack of decisive action.
"The Punjab Chief Minister has failed to take a firm stand against Khalistani elements. The state is grappling with serious issues, and the government’s inaction is alarming," he remarked.
Additionally, Randhawa dismissed AAP’s claims regarding water contamination in the Yamuna River as baseless and politically motivated.
"It is utterly shameful to allege that Yamuna’s water is poisonous when millions of people consume it daily. If AAP truly believed this claim, they should have taken legal action against the Haryana government and conducted formal testing. Instead, they are indulging in mere rhetoric," he said.
"Operation Lotus" Allegations and Punjab's Political Future
Reacting to AAP’s allegations that its MLAs were being offered ₹15 crore each to switch parties under "Operation Lotus," Randhawa challenged the party to provide evidence.
"If such offers were indeed made, AAP should have filed an FIR. The fact that they haven’t done so only reinforces speculation that Punjab is heading towards mid-term polls," he asserted.
Criticism Over Kejriwal’s Meeting Venue
Randhawa also questioned the choice of venue for Kejriwal’s meeting with Punjab MLAs, arguing that it should have been held within Punjab rather than in Delhi.
"If the meeting was truly about Punjab’s concerns, it should have been held there. Instead, Punjab’s resources—such as government helicopters and chartered flights—were used to transport Kejriwal, depriving the people of Punjab the opportunity to witness the discussions firsthand," he criticized.
The meeting, convened in the wake of AAP’s electoral debacle in the Delhi Assembly elections, was aimed at formulating future strategies for the party. However, given the internal discontent and opposition criticism, Punjab’s political landscape remains volatile, with speculation mounting over the possibility of mid-term elections.
