Sachdeva urged Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena to revoke the merger of four government properties with the Chief Minister’s official residence, alleging that Kejriwal had expanded the bungalow by annexing adjacent government-owned land.
“The next Chief Minister of Delhi will not reside in this bungalow,” Sachdeva asserted, adding that the BJP-led administration would decide on the future use of the property.
Allegations of Misuse of Public Funds
Kejriwal, who served as Delhi’s Chief Minister from 2015 until October 2024, vacated the residence following his resignation amid corruption allegations leveled by the BJP. However, the lavish renovation of the bungalow in recent years has drawn criticism, with the BJP accusing Kejriwal of hypocrisy—contrasting his self-styled image as a “common man” with alleged extravagant spending on his official residence.
BJP MLA Calls for Restoration of CM’s Residence
Newly elected Rohini BJP MLA Vijender Gupta, a former Leader of Opposition, has written to the Lieutenant Governor, demanding the restoration of the Chief Minister’s residence to its original state. He also called for the removal of encroachments on government land allegedly annexed during Kejriwal’s tenure.
In his letter, Gupta claimed that Kejriwal expanded the official residence from 10,000 square meters to over 50,000 square meters, incorporating eight Type-V flats at 45 and 47 Rajpur Road, as well as two government bungalows at 8A and 8B Flagstaff Road. He described the expansion as both illegal and unethical, asserting that it lacked proper authorization and violated legal procedures.
BJP Ends AAP’s Decade-Long Rule
The controversy over the “Sheesh Mahal” comes in the wake of the BJP’s resounding victory in the Delhi Assembly elections, where the party secured 48 out of 70 seats, ending AAP’s 10-year dominance in the capital. This victory paves the way for the BJP to form a government in Delhi for the first time in 27 years.
With the new administration set to take charge, the fate of the former CM’s residence remains a point of political and administrative scrutiny.
