New Delhi: Outgoing Delhi Chief Minister Atishi tendered her resignation to Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena on Sunday, following the decisive mandate delivered by voters in the assembly elections on February 8.
Subsequently, the Lieutenant Governor issued an official notification announcing the dissolution of the Seventh Legislative Assembly of the National Capital Territory (NCT) of Delhi. Dated February 7, the notification stated: “In exercise of the power conferred upon me by sub-section (2)(b) of section 6 of the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi Act, 1991, I, Vinai Kumar Saxena, Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, hereby dissolve the Seventh Legislative Assembly of the National Capital Territory of Delhi with effect from 8th February 2025.”
As vote counting progressed on Saturday, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) headed towards a decisive victory, Atishi acknowledged the setback but reaffirmed her party’s resolve to continue its political fight against the BJP.
"First and foremost, I extend my gratitude to the people of Delhi and our dedicated party workers who stood firm. We respect and accept the people’s mandate. However, our fight against the BJP’s authoritarianism and intimidation will persist. This is a setback, but the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) will continue its struggle for the people of Delhi and the nation,” Atishi stated while addressing reporters.
Thanking her supporters, she remarked, “I am deeply grateful to the people who placed their trust in me. I also commend my team for their relentless efforts in taking our message to the public despite all challenges. While I have retained my seat, this is not a moment for celebration—it is a moment for resistance."
Atishi contested from the Kalkaji constituency against BJP’s Ramesh Vidhuri and Congress leader Alka Lamba. Asserting AAP’s commitment to fighting injustice, she emphasized, “Yes, this may be a step back, but AAP remains steadfast in its fight.”
Meanwhile, the BJP is set to reclaim power in Delhi after a 26-year hiatus, marking a significant political shift in the national capital. The party’s sweeping victory signals yet another expansion of its electoral dominance across the country.
