Foreign Influence Allegations in India’s 2024 Elections: BJP and Congress Clash Over Trump’s Remarks

New Delhi: The political landscape in India has been rocked by fresh controversy following former U.S. President Donald Trump’s remarks suggesting that foreign forces attempted to influence the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Trump’s statements, which implied an effort to sway the electoral outcome in favor of a particular candidate, have led to a sharp escalation in rhetoric between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Indian National Congress (INC).

BJP IT cell head Amit Malviya has shared multiple video clips of Prime Minister Narendra Modi speaking about the alleged foreign interference in India's elections. Malviya's posts attempt to bolster BJP’s longstanding claims that external forces were working against Modi’s government.

Meanwhile, the Congress Party has dismissed Trump’s statements as baseless and misleading, arguing that the former U.S. President has a history of making factually incorrect and exaggerated claims.

Trump and the U.S. Funding Controversy

The controversy stems from the decision by the U.S. Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) to revoke $21 million (₹160 crore) in funding that had been allocated to increase voter participation in India under the Biden administration. Trump defended this move, questioning why American taxpayers' money should be used for another country’s elections.

"Why should we give India $21 million? They have enough money. India is one of the highest-taxing nations in the world. They impose heavy tariffs. While I respect India and Prime Minister Modi, why are we funding their voter participation?" Trump asked during an event in Miami.

Modi’s Previous Warnings About Foreign Influence

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had previously raised concerns about foreign interference, notably during the Karnataka election campaign in 2023. In a speech delivered in Chikkaballapur, Modi warned about global forces working against his government:

"Powerful individuals from across the world are uniting with the sole objective of removing Modi’s government. However, the blessings of India’s women and mothers serve as my shield, allowing me to continue my work despite these challenges."

During a rally in Surguja, Chhattisgarh, Modi echoed similar sentiments, alleging that certain global entities and influential individuals were displeased with India's growing self-reliance and economic strength.

"If India becomes stronger, their influence will diminish. If India achieves self-sufficiency, their power will be rendered useless. This is why they want a weak government led by Congress and the INDIA bloc—a government marked by corruption and internal conflicts. History has shown that Congress has often compromised national interests for power," Modi declared.

BJP’s Allegations Against Congress

The BJP has intensified its attack on Congress, linking Rahul Gandhi’s 2023 visit to London with alleged attempts to solicit foreign intervention in India’s internal affairs. Amit Malviya, in a post on X (formerly Twitter), stated:

*"In March 2023, ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Rahul Gandhi was in London, urging foreign powers—from the U.S. to Europe—to intervene in India’s internal affairs.

He has aligned himself with global networks seeking to undermine India’s strategic and geopolitical interests, acting as a tool for foreign agencies.

Now, former U.S. President Donald Trump has confirmed that there was indeed an attempt to influence the Indian election and install someone other than Prime Minister Modi."*

Congress’ Response: Calls for a White Paper on U.S. Aid

The Congress Party has dismissed these allegations, asserting that foreign aid has been a long-standing practice and demanding that the government release a White Paper on U.S. financial assistance. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh took to X to counter the BJP’s claims:

*"USAID is very much in the news these days.

It was set up on November 3, 1961. Claims being made by the U.S. President are typically nonsensical, to say the least. Even so, the Government of India should bring out a White Paper at the earliest, detailing USAID's support to both governmental and non-governmental institutions in India over the decades."*

The Broader Implications

The Trump-Biden funding controversy and the BJP-Congress faceoff over foreign interference have added a new dimension to India’s electoral politics. While the BJP portrays Modi as a leader resisting global pressures, Congress insists that such claims are politically motivated and factually unfounded.

As the debate intensifies, the controversy raises critical questions about foreign influence in Indian democracy, the role of international financial aid, and the legitimacy of political narratives crafted around global intervention.
