Rekha Gupta Assumes Office as Delhi's Chief Minister, Announces Ayushman Bharat Implementation

New Delhi, [Date] – Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta expressed gratitude to her supporters on Friday, reaffirming her administration's commitment to governance reforms. She announced that her government had promptly approved the Ayushman Bharat scheme in its first cabinet meeting—an initiative previously blocked by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).

Speaking to the media, Chief Minister Gupta stated, "In our first cabinet meeting, we approved the Ayushman Bharat scheme, which was earlier stalled by AAP. The scheme will soon be implemented for public benefit. Additionally, we have convened a meeting with officials from the Public Works Department (PWD) and the Jal Board to address pressing civic concerns, including pothole management."

A large number of supporters gathered outside her residence in Shalimar Bagh to congratulate her, presenting garlands and bouquets.

Historic Oath-Taking Ceremony

Rekha Gupta was officially sworn in as the ninth Chief Minister of Delhi at a grand ceremony held at Ramlila Maidan on Thursday. She is the second woman from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to assume the chief ministerial post in Delhi and the fourth woman overall to hold this office in the national capital.

Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena administered the oath of office to Chief Minister Gupta and her council of ministers. The new cabinet includes six other ministers: Parvesh Verma, Ashish Sood, Manjinder Singh Sirsa, Ravinder Indraj Singh, Kapil Mishra, and Pankaj Kumar Singh.

A Political Journey Rooted in Grassroots Activism

Elected from the Shalimar Bagh constituency, Rekha Gupta brings extensive experience in organizational leadership. She has previously served as the General Secretary of the BJP Mahila Morcha in Delhi and as a member of the party's national executive committee. Throughout her tenure, she has spearheaded various initiatives aimed at uplifting marginalized communities and advocating for women's rights.

Gupta's political journey began with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the student wing affiliated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). A graduate of Delhi University's Daulat Ram College, she was elected President of the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) in 1996-97, where she actively championed student issues. Later, as a councillor from North Pitampura in 2007, she worked towards improving civic infrastructure, including libraries and public parks. She holds a law degree and is also the founder of AAS, a non-governmental organization (NGO).

Strategic Appointment Amid Political Considerations

Gupta, a first-time MLA, was chosen over senior BJP leaders, with the party reportedly emphasizing women’s leadership as a key focus. Her selection follows intense speculation surrounding the chief ministerial candidate after the BJP’s victory in the Delhi Assembly elections, the results of which were announced on February 8.

Despite losing the 2023 mayoral election to AAP's Shelly Oberoi, Gupta remains a prominent figure in Delhi BJP’s leadership. Known for maintaining a relatively low profile compared to some of her counterparts, her appointment underscores the BJP’s commitment to increasing female representation in governance.

With her elevation, Rekha Gupta becomes the only woman among the current BJP Chief Ministers, reinforcing the party’s emphasis on women’s empowerment as a crucial agenda for its leadership.
