Haryana Police Parades Extortion Accused in Viral Video; Authorities Deny Forced Humiliation

Gurugram, February 21: A video purportedly showing police officers parading an accused with a shaved head and wearing a skirt through the streets of Rewari, Haryana, has gone viral on social media, sparking controversy over alleged police misconduct.

The individual, identified as Rohit alias Kalia, was reportedly arrested for attempting to extort money from a property dealer. He was allegedly handcuffed and escorted from the Crime Branch station in Old Tehsil to Moti Chowk, the city’s main market.

Accused Previously Served 12 Years in Prison

In the viral video, Kalia can be seen limping as he is led through the market. He had recently been released from prison after serving a 12-year sentence in an unrelated case.

This incident comes just two days after three other theft suspects were similarly paraded through the streets by the police. According to local reports, those individuals were also seen limping.

Police Deny Allegations of Forced Public Humiliation

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Surender Sheoran denied claims that the accused was forced to wear a skirt.

Regarding the previous incident, Sheoran clarified that the accused were not being publicly shamed but were merely being escorted for investigative purposes.
"The police took the suspects to another location for evidence recovery without using a vehicle. Yes, they were walking, but it should not be considered a parade," he stated.

Chain of Thefts Led to Arrests

According to police sources, a burglary was reported on February 17 at a textile shop in Railway Road Market. Upon investigation, officers discovered that three different stores had been looted, including two clothing shops and a jewelry store.

The three accused—Rahul and Ajay from Manglesar Majra, and Monu from Gurjar Majra—were arrested for allegedly breaking into the stores and stealing merchandise worth lakhs of rupees.

Extortion Attempt Led to Kalia’s Arrest

Authorities revealed that Rohit alias Kalia has a criminal record, including attempted murder charges. Having recently been released from prison, he allegedly resumed his criminal activities.

On February 19, he reportedly stormed into a property dealer’s office, brandished a revolver, and issued threats, saying:
"If you want to do business, keep ₹10 lakh ready."

Following the incident, the property dealer immediately informed the police, leading to Kalia’s arrest on February 20.
