Two Indian students who tragically lost their lives in a car crash in Co Carlow last Friday are set to be repatriated to India.
Bhargav Chitturi (23) and Suresh Cherukuri (24) died when the vehicle they were traveling in crashed on the N80 in Leagh, Rathoe, at approximately 1:15 am. Both were students at South East Technological University (SETU) in Carlow and were pronounced dead at the scene. Their remains were subsequently taken to University Hospital Waterford for postmortem examinations.
Two other passengers in the vehicle—a man and a woman, both in their 20s—sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to St Luke’s General Hospital in Kilkenny for medical treatment. Garda forensic investigators examined the crash site for several hours following the incident, confirming that no other vehicles were involved.
All four victims had been residing together in Carlow town. The Indian embassy is coordinating the repatriation of the deceased, with official procedures expected to take several days. Funeral services will be held in India.
Community Support and Fundraising Efforts
In the wake of the tragedy, an online fundraising campaign has garnered over €64,000 to support the families of the deceased and the injured survivors.
Anniversary of a Previous Fatal Crash
The incident occurred on the first anniversary of another devastating crash on the same stretch of road, which claimed the lives of three friends: Katie Graham (19) from Arles, Co Laois; Daryl Culbert (21) from Kiltegan, Co Wicklow; and Michael Kelly (25) from Nurney, Co Carlow on January 31, 2024.
