For the eighth consecutive year, Jack has retained its position as the most popular name for boys in Ireland, while Sophie has reclaimed the top spot among girls' names.
According to the latest figures released by the Central Statistics Office (CSO), the top five names for boys in 2024 were Jack, Noah, Rían, Cillian, and James. Completing the top 10 were Tadhg, Fionn, Liam, Oisín, and Charlie.
Among girls, Sophie secured the number one position, followed by Emma, Grace, Emily, and Fiadh. The remaining top 10 names were Lily, Olivia, Amelia, Sadie, and Mia.
New Entrants and Notable Trends
The CSO data also highlighted several new additions to the top 100 list. Rowan, Caleb, and Iarlaith made their debut among boys' names, while Hallie, Rhea, Caragh, and Aurora entered the rankings for girls.
Caleb recorded the most significant rise in popularity, climbing from 142nd place in 2023 to 91st in 2024. Among girls, Rhea experienced the most notable increase, jumping 37 places from 130th in 2023 to 93rd in 2024.
Jack has remained Ireland’s most popular boys’ name every year since 2007, with the exception of 2016 when James briefly took the top spot. Both names have consistently ranked among the top five for the past 26 years. Sophie, meanwhile, last held the number one position in 2010.
Popularity Among Diverse Communities
The CSO report also examined naming trends among parents of different national origins. David and Sophia were the most popular names for boys and girls born to parents from other EU countries. Among parents from non-EU countries (excluding Ireland and the UK), Muhammad emerged as the top choice for boys, while Hazel was the most popular name for girls.
Most Common Surnames for 2024 Births
In addition to first names, the CSO expanded its analysis to include surname trends. Murphy, Kelly, Byrne, O’Brien, and Walsh were the five most common surnames associated with newborns in 2024. Of the 54,060 live births recorded, 20,812 had unique surnames, reflecting the diversity of naming conventions in Ireland.
