New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah convened a high-level meeting with Delhi’s newly elected Chief Minister Rekha Gupta to discuss urgent measures to combat interstate gangs and address the issue of illegal immigration.
The meeting was attended by Minister of State for Home Affairs Ashish Sood, the Delhi Commissioner of Police, and senior officials responsible for law and order and inter-agency coordination. Emphasizing the importance of governance efficiency, the Home Minister stated that the double-engine government in Delhi will operate at double speed to ensure security and development.
Crackdown on Illegal Immigration
Highlighting the need for strict action against unauthorized migrants, the Home Minister directed authorities to dismantle the networks facilitating the entry, documentation, and settlement of Bangladeshi and Rohingya migrants in India. He stressed that illegal immigration is a national security concern that must be addressed with urgency, and those identified should be deported immediately.
Targeting Organized Crime and Gang Networks
The Home Minister underscored the need for stringent measures against underperforming police stations and sub-divisions. He instructed the Delhi Police to prioritize the elimination of interstate gangs operating in the city, adopting a ruthless approach to dismantle criminal networks.
He also directed law enforcement agencies to adopt a comprehensive, top-to-bottom and bottom-to-top strategy to curb narcotics trafficking and eradicate its supply chain completely.
Swift Disposal of 2020 Riot Cases
Minister Shah stated that Delhi Police will no longer require permission for construction-related matters in the capital. Additionally, he urged the Delhi government to appoint special prosecutors to expedite the resolution of pending cases related to the 2020 Delhi riots.
Implementation of ‘Monsoon Action Plan’
The Home Minister emphasized the importance of public engagement, directing DCP-level officers to conduct visits to police stations, organize public grievance redressal camps, and resolve citizen complaints promptly.
He also instructed Delhi Police to establish new security committees in JJ clusters to enhance the safety of women and children. Furthermore, he called for an assessment of areas facing frequent traffic congestion and tasked the Delhi Police Commissioner and Chief Secretary with developing a swift resolution plan.
In preparation for the upcoming monsoon season, the Home Minister directed the Delhi government to formulate a ‘Monsoon Action Plan’ by identifying and addressing areas prone to waterlogging, ensuring timely infrastructural improvements.
