New Delhi External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar emphasized the need to expedite the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between India and the European Union, calling for concrete progress on the deal during the IIC-Bruegel Annual Seminar. Highlighting the EU’s significance as India’s largest economic partner, Jaishankar underscored the growing depth of bilateral engagement across multiple sectors, including controlled technologies, digital transactions, disaster resilience, clean technologies, sustainable urbanization, and infrastructure development.
Jaishankar also pointed to the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) as a key initiative that merits global attention. While acknowledging that geopolitical developments in the Middle East since October 2023 have slowed its progress, he confirmed that initial steps have already been taken between India and Gulf nations. The corridor, envisioned as a major trade and connectivity route, aims to enhance economic cooperation across regions and strengthen India’s role in global supply chains.
Beyond IMEC, Jaishankar highlighted India's broader push for strategic connectivity, particularly through land linkages with Southeast Asia. This, he noted, forms part of a larger vision stretching from the Atlantic to the Pacific, reinforcing India’s commitment to expanding its economic and technological footprint on the global stage. As India strengthens its infrastructure and trade partnerships, these initiatives are expected to play a crucial role in reshaping regional and global commerce.
