Bangalore (Karnataka) , India, February 17: India has long faced a severe water crisis, threatening agriculture, livelihoods, and ecological balance. However, amidst this challenge, a transformative initiative is bringing hope and sustainability. JalTara, a pioneering water conservation program by The Art of Living Social Projects, is revitalizing groundwater resources across the country. With scalable and sustainable solutions, this initiative is addressing one of India’s most pressing environmental concerns.
A Visionary Initiative for Water Security
Inspired by the vision of Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, a globally respected humanitarian and spiritual leader, JalTara is leading efforts to restore groundwater levels and ensure water security in drought-prone regions. Through scientifically designed yet simple interventions, this initiative is transforming barren landscapes into fertile farmlands, securing water access for rural communities, and fostering long-term sustainability.
At the core of JalTara’s success is its innovative yet straightforward approach. The technique involves strategically placed recharge pits filled with rocks of varying sizes, which capture rainwater and direct it back into the earth. This replenishes groundwater reserves while also mitigating water scarcity and ecological degradation.
A Dual Solution: Combating Drought and Flooding
JalTara’s impact is twofold, making it a game-changer in sustainable water management. During droughts, the recharge structures act as natural reservoirs, replenishing depleted groundwater reserves and ensuring water availability for irrigation and domestic use. In monsoon seasons, they mitigate flooding by controlling runoff, reducing soil erosion, and protecting fertile topsoil essential for agriculture. With a cost-effective, scalable, and adaptable design, JalTara provides a practical, low-maintenance solution for rural communities across India.
From Grassroots Success to Nationwide Impact
What began in 2021 with 1,400 recharge structures across four villages has expanded exponentially, with over 60,000 structures now benefiting more than 140 villages. In many areas, groundwater levels have increased by 3 to 5 meters, turning previously barren lands into thriving ecosystems.
Currently operational in Karnataka, Maharashtra, Telangana, Haryana, and Andhra Pradesh, JalTara aims to recharge 15 trillion liters of groundwater annually across 100,000 villages in the next five years, marking an unprecedented effort to address India’s water crisis on a national scale.
Measurable and Transformative Impact
The success of JalTara is evident in its remarkable results:
- 14 ft. increase in groundwater levels (March 2021 - March 2022)
- 42% growth in crop yields
- 120% surge in farmer incomes
- 100% reduction in crop spoilage
- 58% increase in land cultivation during the Rabi season
- 88% rise in rural employment opportunities
Beyond water conservation, JalTara has also contributed significantly to environmental sustainability, planting over 100,000 trees and restoring 201,200 acres of land, thereby enhancing biodiversity and ecosystem health.
Empowering Rural Communities Through Grassroots Participation
A key factor behind JalTara’s success is its community-driven approach. By actively involving local villagers in the planning and execution of recharge structures, the initiative ensures sustainability, skill development, and long-term self-reliance. The ripple effects of JalTara extend beyond water security, enhancing health, nutrition, and economic stability in rural India.
Strategic Collaborations Driving Impact
JalTara’s expansion has been strengthened through partnerships with leading corporate entities via CSR initiatives, including:
- OVBI: 25,000 recharge structures in Jalna, Maharashtra
- SGF: 10,500 structures in Jalna, Maharashtra
- Safe Shop: 1,000 structures in Jalna, Maharashtra
- Tata Hitachi: 500 structures in Latur, Maharashtra
- Wipro: 500 structures in Tumkur, Karnataka
Upcoming Initiatives

National Recognition: Best CSR Impact Award
JalTara’s transformative impact was officially recognized on June 21, 2024, when The Art of Living received the Best CSR Impact Award at the NGI CSR Summit in Hyderabad.
A Sustainable Future: A Water-Positive India
JalTara is more than just a water conservation project—it is a movement reshaping India’s approach to water security. By integrating scientific innovation, community participation, and corporate collaboration, this initiative is reviving ecosystems, restoring livelihoods, and ensuring a water-abundant future.
As The Art of Living Social Projects continues to expand JalTara’s reach, every recharge pit dug, every tree planted, and every drop conserved brings India one step closer to a future where water scarcity is no longer a threat.
